CARIGNAN: Iona Louise, 69, of Ponteix, SK passed away suddenly on January 29, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 12, 1950 in Ponteix to parents Olaf and Marjorie Braaten. On August 16, 1969 she married the love of her life Louis Carignan. They built a home of love and laughter that lasted over 50 years. They were blessed with three children - Alin (Stacey - Dylan, Arianna, Keera), Jodi (Troy - Keeley, Riley), and Todd. Family was extremely important to Iona as she rarely missed an opportunity to celebrate those she loved. Many memories were made on numerous trips out west to spend time with her sister, Eileen Braaten, in Cranbrook, BC and her brother Ivan Braaten, in the Okanagan. She had a special bond with her brother Bill Braaten from Edmonton, who lost his battle with cancer in 2015. Iona genuinely enjoyed watching the faces of her children and, later on, grandchildren as they participated in their many activities. Her amazing smile and infectious laughter were often heard in rinks, gymnasiums, and dance auditoriums. Iona's sense of pride in her family was evident with her endless support and encouragement. Iona greatly cherished her friendships and spent many countless hours volunteering in her community. After completing R.C.I.A. with the support of her Godmother, Denise St. Cyr, she joined the Catholic faith community and became involved for many years with the CWL. She also was involved as chairperson of the Notre Dame d'Auvergne Church Council. Her love for music led her to participate in many choirs and concerts. Over the years she belonged to many groups and clubs which involved her favorite activities of bowling, curling, and many types of crafts (especially quilting). The memorial mass services will take place at Notre Dame d'Auvergne Roman Catholic Church on February 4, 2020 at 11:00AM with Father Guy Amedee Ainemon officiating. The pianist was Daniel Roberge accompanied by the Trinity Gospel Choir, the cross bearers were Keeley and Riley Olson and Arianna and Keera Carignan, and the urn bearers were Todd and Alin Carignan. The scripture readings and intentions were by Troy Olson and Andrea Tataryn-Miller, the offerings were presented by Marguerite Cloutier and Rita Cyrenne and the eulogy was read by Jodi Carignan-Olson. The interment service was held from the Notre Dame Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society 1910 McIntyre Street Regina, SK S4P 2R3 or to The Shine On Foundation http://shineonfoundation.ca/donate/.
