Denis Roger Bedard passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, at the age of 77, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He left this world as he lived—stubborn, strong, and full of humour—and is now reunited with his beloved wife Laurena, whom he has missed dearly for the past three years.
Born May 18, 1948, in Ponteix, Saskatchewan, Denis was the third of five children—and to his teachers’ dismay, the wildest, funniest, and most clever of the bunch. At a very young age, he could outsmart, out-joke, and out-prank just about anyone. His childhood stories are legendary. He went to school in Ponteix until grade eight, completed grades nine and ten at Collège Mathieu and finished his education at Ponteix High School.
In 1968, Denis met the love of his life, Laurena. The two shared an inseparable bond, getting engaged on her high school graduation day and marrying on August 5, 1972, in Val Marie. Together, they built a beautiful life, first in Swift Current and, two years later, back in Ponteix, where Denis partnered with his brother-in-law, Alphonse Douville, in a backhoe business.
In 1977, he began his lifelong farming career by purchasing a half-section of land from his father. With hard work and dedication, he and Laurena steadily grew their farm while raising their family.
In the summer of 1983, they built a new home on the Bedard homestead, a place filled with love, laughter, and countless family memories.
Denis wore many hats throughout his life – quite literally and figuratively. He was not only a farmer, but also a machinist, housebuilder, carpenter, artist, photographer, and (according to his kids) Amazon’s best customer. And above all, he was a great dad. He proudly earned a certificate in Agriculture while farming full-time, a testament to his determination and love for the land. He mastered oil painting and wood carving, could play piano and fix anything that broke. He succeeded at anything he tried, even in the kitchen, whipping up the most delicious angels on horseback, wonton soup and chop suey. He hunted, fished (sometimes dragging Laurena along), and enjoyed adventures near and far - from long drives to check crops (which usually ended in ice cream) to more distant locations like Los Angeles, Dominican Republic, Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia, and New Zealand.
Denis’ sense of humor was legendary—sometimes sarcastic, often inappropriate, but always unforgettable. He loved his family, his friends, his farm, and yes, his cigarettes. To know Denis was to know resilience, creativity, and laughter. One of his true joys was people. He treasured coffee time with his buddies at the local coffee shop, where stories, laughter, and gossip were always on the menu. After Laurena’s passing, the love and support from the community carried him through, and his family is forever grateful for the kindness that surrounded him.
More than any of his accomplishments, Denis was most proud of the life he and Laurena built together and the joy of raising their three (amazing) children Andre (Carri), Josée (Kim) and Miguel (Amber), who will always remain his greatest achievement.
Denis will be lovingly remembered by his children; grandchildren Logan, Olivia, Matthew, Hanna, Brody and Adaline; sisters Marie and Claire (Marty) and countless friends and family who were fortunate to share in his life. He is predeceased by his wife Laurena, his parents Osman and Marie Anne and his siblings Yolande and Olier. Denis leaves behind a legacy of laughter, creativity, and grit, and his children find comfort knowing he and their mom are together again.
