Balzer, born on June 25, 1929, at the Ponteix, Saskatchewan hospital, left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. He was the seventh child in a family of eight, the only one not born at home, marking the beginning of a journey filled with resilience and warmth.
Growing up on the family farm in the Billimun district, Balzer imbibed the values of hard work and dedication early on. Though he left school after the eighth grade, to help support his family on the farm alongside his parents, his thirst for knowledge remained insatiable throughout his life.
On October 29, 1951, Balzer joined hands in marriage with Mildred Konanz at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in the Billimun district, where they later established their home on a half – section of land north of his father’s farm. Together, they nurtured a family and created a haven filled with love and laughter.
In 1968, their journey took a new turn as they purchased the Mankota Hotel and embraced life in town. Yet, Balzer’s spirit of industriousness never wavered. He continued farming until 1998 when he supposedly retired, though his hands remained as busy as ever, always ready to lend a helping one.
Balzer’s passions were as diverse as they were vibrant. From fishing to upholstery, wine and sausage – making, and the beloved game of cribbage, he approached each endeavor with gusto and finesse. His knack for fixing things became legendary among friends and family, a testament to his resourcefulness and generosity.
In 2002, Balzer and Mildred embarked on a new chapter, moving to Swift Current. Here, amidst the embrace of family and the solace of faith, they found a sense of belonging and community. His devotion to his family and faith was unwavering until his final moments, with Deacon Dave standing as a testament to the profound friendships he cultivated.
Though Mildred passed away in 2018, Balzer’s love endured, a beacon of strength and compassion for all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the memories he crafted, the lives he touched, and the love he shared. Rest in peace, Balzer, your light will forever shine in our hearts.
