Melvin Glen Olson of Val Marie, SK passed away March 6, 2019. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, March 16, 2019 from the Church of the Nativity, Val Marie with Ron Silvester officiating. Special music was preformed by Jim Habour, Cathy Grant Arlis Hanson and Carol Masecar. The Ushers were Evan Laturnus and Rylan Laturnus. A Life Tribute was read by Steve Grant and the Urn Bearers were Sharyn Erne and Kal Olson. The Interment Service took place at the Val Marie Community Cemetery. Mel was born to Francis and Orla Olson on December 6th, 1955 at Val Marie Hospital in Val Marie, Saskatchewan, the youngest of four. He attended Val Marie School from grade 1-9 then attended Swift Current Comp school from grade 10- 12; taking mechanics. Mel started farming at an early age of 16, purchasing his first piece of land. He farmed and ranched with his dad and brother raising Hereford cattle. In 1982 he purchased the Laurence Dumont place just below 70 Mile butte. He married the love of his life, Bernice Laturnus in 1984 and moved a mobile home onto that place. They started with only the bare necessities and built from there. In 1987 they were blessed with a son Dwight, then in 1988 a daughter Kristen, in 1992 another son Tyrell and later in 1997 another daughter Hayley. Mel was predeceased by his father Francis in 2003, his mother Orla in 2007, a cousin Carl in 1972, his sister Debbie in 2014, a cousin JoAnn in 2018, as well as several Aunts and Uncles. He is survived by his loving wife Bernice of 34 years, his son Dwight, wife Heather and baby girl Quinn. Daughter Kristen (Jeremy Mielke). Son Tyrell (Josey Vayro). Daughter Hayley, and his two working companions, dog Max and horse Doby. His Brother Kalvin Olson. Sister Sharyn Erne (Vern Letkeman) and their children, Trent and Shari Erne, Blaine Erne, Shelby and Evan Budd, Todd and Kim Letkeman, Tammy and Greg Knowles, Chad and Terri Murrell. Carmen and Duane Hanson, Karson and Sue Legault, Cody and Jan Legault, and their families. His Mother and Father in-law Leo and Vi Laturnus. In-laws, Wayne and Caralee Laturnus, Gerald and Karen Kress, Howard and Bonnie Laturnus, and their families and all who knew him. Mel will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his family and friends. In his memory, memorial donation may be made to the Arnal Boys Memorial Bursary for Young Farmers, Box 2797, Swift Current, Sk S9H 4V1 or the Val Marie Ambulance Service, General Delivery, Val Marie, SK.
