Laurent Carignan Obituary

Carignan: Laurent Joseph Carignan of Ponteix, Saskatchewan passed away on February 13, 2019, at the age of 92. Laurent was born September 25, 1926 in Ponteix. He was the 3rd child of a family of 16. His parents were Mari Anna and Edouard Carignan. Laurent is survived by three brothers-Emile, Raymond (Marie-Jeanne), and Louis (Iona) and five sisters-Lucille Ferland, Denise St.Cyr, Gisele Carignan, Rollande Kucik and Helene Shanner (Don) as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Laurent was predeceased by his parents, Marie Anna and Edouard, three sisters-Alice in infancy, Rita Martin and Suzanne Bellefeuille, four brothers-Henri, Maurice, John and Alcide. Laurent attended school in Ponteix. At 16, he quit school to work at his father's dairy farm. He held various jobs including working on the railway. Most of his working life was spent working on farms around Ponteix. In 1942, he was a member of the militia and trained in Dundurn, Saskachewan. Laurent was a member of the church choir for many years. He was a member of the Catholic Youth Club (CYC) and was active in several drama productions. He was an avid bowler for many years, a former Legion member and an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus. Laurent loved sports and supported the Ponteix Penguin Hockey Club for many years. He would regularly travel to see the Swift Current Broncos in action. For years, he would travel to Moose Jaw to watch the Gey Cup with his brother Alcide and share a few "pops" with him. Laurent was proud of his family and was always there to support them in their time of need. He took a special interest in classic cars and watches. He was proud to drive a nice car and often offered to drive his family and friends whenever he could. His last 10 or so years were spent at the Foyer St Joseph Care home where he appreciated the wonderful care the staff gave him. Funeral services was held at the Notre Dame d'Auvergne Catholic Church on Friday, February 22 at 11:00 am with Father Guy Amedee Ainemon officiating. Interment will be at the Ponteix Catholic Church Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Foyer St Joseph Care Home.
